Writing: Inspirations

When people ask me where I find the ideas for my stories, I’m tempted to say “rummage table at Tesco”. Well, mentioning the National Maritime Museum would be more appropriate, but they don’t have rummage tables. It’s a shame, really – “Lieutenants! Broody lieutenants! Buy two, get a curious midshipman for free!”

Then again, maybe not.

I can, however, show you the picture which influenced the way I wrote Messrs Denningham and Barnett in my upcoming trilogy “The Purser, The Surgeon, The Captain And His Lieutenant” (please ignore the skyline, the story takes place in London):

This intimate moment defined for me the way my characters care for each other. The lieutenant, protective of his captain, is at the same time leaning on him for comfort.

And the purser is nursing another pint and cursing the navy, but that’s a different aspect of the story…!
